East Grand comes back to defeat DL in five sets

Detroit Lakes took two of the first three sets but East Grand Forks rallied for a 3-2 victory in Section 8AA volleyball at Ralph Anderson Gymnasium Tuesday night.

Both teams split the first two sets winning comfortably. The Lakers took the opener 25-20 after a Teeya Doppler ace to get to set point and a Rachael Perkins kill to go up 1-0.

The Green Wave built a 14-5 lead in set two and won by nine points 25-16.

The third set went long with the teams playing to a stalemate from 24-all to a tie at 27 on a Bre Price kill down the line. Jocelyn Patnaude’s serve created an error from the visitors and Laura Prussia and Doppler converted a block for set point 29-27 and a 2-1 advantage in the match.

The race to 20 points in set four came after DL led 15-12 and the teams traded points after a tie score 16-16.

East Grand had set point leading by two but Price and Patnaude blocked to get within one leading to a Doppler kill at 24-24. The Wave reached set point again after a Laker error and a resounding block from senior Julia Warmack to knot that match 2-2.

Hitting errors by DL gave EGF a 5-0 cushion to start the race to 15 points in the fifth.

Laker Head Coach Sara Schnathorst used a timeout to change momentum and climb back into the set and tie the score 8-8 on back-to-back kills from Patnaude and Gunderson. With Gunderson serving, DL took a 9-8 lead but the Wave rallied with seven of the final eight points for victory winning 15-10 and 3-2.

East Grand improves to 4-11; Detroit Lakes falls to 4-9. The Lakers face 6-6 Thief River Falls on the road Thursday, Sept. 28 at 7:30 p.m.
