Moving the Driller Promotions No Mercy VI mixed martial arts fights from Kent Freeman Arena in Detroit Lakes to Shooting Star Casino in Mahnomen brought plenty of uncertainty to organizers but fighters battled in front of a big crowd at the casino’s event center Saturday.
Much of the pre-fight formulation, including the seating set-up, were completed in the week up to the fights as it was a first time for not just the fighters or organizers, but also the casino, according to Chris Holt.
Holt has done much of the legwork in getting MMA a foothold here in northern Minnesota and packed the house with great sightlines for fans.
The bouts featured two co-main events.
Maurice Green improved to 5-1 making quick work of Parnell Davis with a first-round arm-triangle choke. The fight went to the ground quickly and was over in a hurry. The fight was contested for an interim belt as Frazee’s fan favorite and Driller heavyweight title holder Brian Heden is currently out with an injury.
In the other main event, UFC veteran Chico Camus won his fourth consecutive match going three tough rounds with Titan FC title challenger Andrew Whitney winning in a unanimous decision.
Camus bloodied Whitney with a cut and commanded the fight on the ground eliminating much of Whitney’s punching power.
FloCombat Prospect of the Month for August J.P. Saint Louis (3-1) of Wisconsin handed Nevis’ Collin Huckbody his first loss in three fights. The duo exchanged solid kicks but Saint Louis put a quick finish to the fight in the first round with a guillotine choke.
Eric Kemper defeated Fikret Saric of Pelican Rapids with a second round rear-naked choke.
Abby Kalina of Perham was defeated in her first fight in a unanimous decision to Laura Sanchez.
Fargo’s Mariah Prussia missed a chance to showcase her style when opponent Carolyn Biskup pulled out the week of the fights.
