Red Lake County scored on their opening drive and held the lead for the entire game in a 26-14 victory on Homecoming at Lake Park-Audubon Friday night.
Derek Peterson capped a 67-yard drive to open the scoring with a three-yard run and ran in the conversion to go up 8-0 with seven minutes remaining in the first quarter.
The Raiders responded quickly on the first play of their second drive on a short pass from Teddy Schauer to Carter Raaen. Raaen turned the pass into a 72-yard touchdown reception making two tacklers miss and using a cutback to win the race to the end zone.
The Raiders point-after pass failed to keep the Rebels in the lead 8-6.
The Rebels ate up a big chunk of yardage on their first play of the ensuing drive when a 15-yard Matt Vettleson run was doubled up with a horse collar flag of 15 yards. Vettleson gained another 15 yards on the next play and the Rebels were in the red zone at the 20-yard line.
The Raiders jumped on a hard count on third and short to set up the Rebels with first-and-goal from the nine-yard line but Connor Lambert was stood up at the five and fumbled. Raider defensive end Will Hannesson made the hit and the fumble recovery on a big defensive stand.
LP-A moved to near midfield but were forced to punt. The snap was well over punter Marcus Dickelman-Stassen’s head to give the Rebels the ball at the Raider 12-yard line.
Peterson scored on a third down sneak from the two for a 14-6 Rebel lead with 11 minutes remaining in the half.
Ethan Vettleson sacked Schauer on the second play of LP-A’s drive and a delay flag moved the Raiders back five yards to force third-and-19 to go and another punt after an incompletion.
Chris Longtin had a pair of long runs to get the Rebels into Raider territory. The Rebels faced third-and-long but converted in the shotgun out of the wishbone formation when Peterson found Ethan Vettleson on a 33-yard touchdown pass to go up 20-6. The Rebels held the Raider offense off the board and ran out the final three minutes of the half with short runs.
The Rebels took the second half kickoff and marched 67 yards to the Raider three-yard line. Lambert scored from the three on fourth-and-goal to go up big 26-6 with 6:42 left in the third quarter.
LP-A responded on the ensuing drive on a 37-yard touchdown pass from Schauer to Grant Pederson and Schauer converted the two-point run up the middle.
The Raiders drove into Rebel territory to start the fourth quarter.
Schauer was sacked on back-to-back plays forcing a fourth-and-12 at the 39-yard line. Schauer broke out of the pocket and scrambled 14 yards for a first down and Jack Osborne rushed to the Rebels’ seven-yard line.
Osborne got to the four on first-and-goal. Schauer’s second down pass was incomplete. A third down pass was knocked away by Austin Jensen and a fourth down pass fell incomplete to kill Raider momentum.
The Raiders fall to 3-4 overall and will wrap up regular season play on the road at undefeated Ada-Borup/Norman County West (6-0) Friday, Oct. 13 in Ada.
