Lucas Johnson of Moorhead, a North Dakota State University golfer, posted a first round 66 (-5) to pace the field after the first day of qualifying at the Pine to Palm golf tournament at Detroit Country Club Tuesday, Aug. 6.
Johnson was one of 18 golfers to break par with 11 of those coming from the morning tee times.
This summer's Minnesota State Junior Boys' Champion Ian Simonich, a Moorhead Spud junior, grabbed the early lead after posting a 67 (+4) and was joined by Johnson's Bison teammate Andrew Israelson in a tie for second place.
Bill Carlson, a former Bison golfer, and West Fargo's Nick Evin are two shots off the pace in a tie for fourth place with matching 68s.
Seven golfers are a two shots back with 2-under 69's.
Detroit Lakes' Nathan Ginnaty is in that group, along with Hawley/Bemidji State golfer Cody Cook, Ryan Ames and Adam Van Raden of Grand Forks, Alex Skarperud of Fargo, Moorhead's Erik Weiss and Cade Montplaisir from Mesa, Arizona.
Last year's runner-up and two-time champion Rick Kuhn, along with the 2018 medalist Will Czeh headline a six-pack of 1-under rounds of 70.
Czeh’s two-day score at last summer's Pine to Palm 65-63 (128) broke Jeff Lamp’s mark of (63-67-130) from 2003 and Cameron White (65-65-130) in 2007 for the all-time qualifying record. Tom Hoge holds the one-day scoring record of nine-under par 62 set in 2009.
Tuesday's group of 70 also includes Nate Varty, a 2017 quarterfinalist, Maple Grove's Nate Adams, John Fischer from Waconia and Austin Rene from Jamestown.
A total of 150 golfers made the first round cut shooting scores of 80 or better including 14 more Detroit Lakes golfers: Ryan Steinert (71), Tanner Lane (73), Isaac Cihak (74), Drew Schwan (74), Wyatt Blomseth (74), Ben Unruh (74), Matt Bekkarus (75), Tanner Schnathorst (75), Aaron Schnathorst (76), Ryan Paskey (77), Hunter Burnside (77), Lukas Justesen (78), Jack Schramel (79) and Jake Green (80).
The two-day cut was a score of 147 in 2018 and 148 in 2017.
The Mid-Am division is the lone group with seeding completed for Thursday's beginning of match play.
Chaska's Darin Nelson shot 71-75 to grab medalist honors with a 146, one stroke better than Jake Witham of Roseville, first round leader Kevin Swenson of Fergus Falls and 2016 champion Scott Uithoven.
