The Moorhead Spuds managed wet conditions after a full day of rain Thursday, Sept. 20 handing the Lakers a loss for the first time in six games by a score of 4-1 at Rotary Soccer Park.
DL had not lost a game since August 30.
Sophomore Olivia Watson gave Moorhead the early lead shooting low to the left side past Laker keeper Payton Carlblom for a 1-0 advantage 15 minutes into the game.
Less than three minutes later, Matteya Borah drove to the net on a Laker free kick and scored getting the ball by charging Spuds’ keeper Emily Soukup to tie the score.
Lily Burnside made a push for the lead with a left-footed shot that got past Soukup and was rolling toward the post before Soukup was able to gather the ball before it crossed the goal line.
The Spuds took a 2-1 lead on a high, arcing shot by junior midfielder Madeline Etter that slipped through the hands of Carlblom.
Moorhead added to the lead on Watson’s second goal of the game going high into the net over Carlblom in the final minute of the half to give the Spuds a 3-1 lead at the break.
Watson completed the hat trick scoring from outside the 18-yard box for her third goal of the night in the 61st minute to put Moorhead up 4-1.
The Spuds controlled the offensive attack in the second half putting more pressure on Carlblom and the DL defenders, while both teams had to manage ball control in standing water on portions of the field.
The Lakers drop to 5-2-2 overall. Moorhead improved to 8-2. Detroit Lakes host Fergus Falls (4-4-1) Saturday, Sept. 22 at 1 p.m. Both teams played to a 2-2 tie last week in Fergus Falls.
