A late second half goal by senior co-captain Cole Metelak gave Detroit Lakes a first-ever victory over the Moorhead Spuds 1-0 at Moorhead high school Thursday, Sept. 20 in a rainy game with multiple downpours.

Prior to this season, Detroit Lakes boys soccer teams have managed two ties against their Class AA rivals since 2002, both by scores of 2-2 in 2004 and 2007.

Since 2010, the Spuds have had DL’s number by big numbers outscoring the Lakers 39-2 in the last seven games making Thursday’s victory a huge win.

Alec Kulasingham assisted on Metelak’s game-winner. Trey Seebold recorded the shutout in net making six saves. All four of DL’s victories this season have been shutouts. Thursday’s was the first on the road. DL defeated Fergus Falls 1-0 in the home opener, won 2-0 over Crookston and 4-0 over Hillcrest Lutheran Academy.

DL has been victorious in two of their last three games to improve to 4-6 overall. The Spuds dropped to 6-4-1 after losing two of the past three games, both to Section 8A teams with a 2-0 defeat at home to Bemidji on Sept. 13.
