Freshman outside hitter Haidyn Gunderson of Detroit Lakes recorded nine kills and one assist in a 3-0 victory over St. Mary’s 25-21, 25-16, 27-27 on Homecoming Saturday, Sept. 29.
The Cobbers recorded back-to-back conference sweeps for the first time since the 2015.
Gunderson added a block assist and two digs in the victory. Gunderson has 39 kills, nine digs and nine blocks in 18 matches.
Freshman Maddie Herzog (Detroit Lakes) placed ninth overall golfing indepently for North Dakota State University with a total score of 232 Sunday, Sept. 30 at the Diane Thomason Invitational at Finkbine Golf Course in Iowa City, Iowa.
Herzog shot rounds of 76, 81 and 75 for her first top 10 collegiate finish.
Sophomore teammate Taylor McCorkle earned her first collegiate win, after shooting a 1-over-par 73 in the final round to erase a two-stroke deficit to finish five-over in a tie for the top spot with Iowa’s Shawn Rennegarbe.
The Hawkeyes won the nine-team tournament by 22 strokes over the Bison in second place.
Mahnomen’s Blake Kahlbaugh, a junior, shot a tournament-best score of 69 and Concordia jumped up four places on the second day of the St. John's Fall Invite to finish third in the final tournament before the MIAC Championship.
Kahlbaugh's sub-70 helped the Cobbers post a team score of 296 which tied for the low team total of the day. Concordia finished with a final team score of 602 (306-296) which was one shot ahead of fourth-place St. Thomas and nine behind runner-up Gustavus. St. John’s defended home turn winning with a team score of 290-296 (586).
A Kahlbaugh has led the Cobbers in three of the five meets season. Last week Nathaniel Kahlbaugh paced CC with a third-place finish at the Gustavus Twin Cities Classic. Nathaniel also paced Concordia at the Cobber Fall Invite when he tied for second with teammate Gage Stromme. Nathaniel Kahlbaugh leads the Cobbers in scoring average this season with a 75.5 mark. Blake is fourth at 77.6 but has been playing his best golf as of late. Blake has shot 76 or better in five of his past six rounds.
Blake Kahlbaugh, Matt Kulla and Detroit Lakes freshman Ryan Paskey all shot identical 76's to lead the Cobbers on day one of of the tournament. Paskey shot 76-83 for a score of 159 (+15) to finish in a tie for 45th place individually.
Mahnomen-Waubun’s Darius Woods-Steichen and Detroit Lakes’ Jake Richter continued their stella seasons for MSUM football.
Woods-Steichen recorded his team-leading fifth sack and Richter had six catches for 103 yards and a touchdown in the Dragons’ 17-13 victory over Upper Iowa in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference action Saturday in Fayette, Iowa.
Richter scored in the second quarter on a 19-yard pass from Jakup Sinani to give MSUM a 10-7 lead.
