Detroit Lakes captured a fifth straight Mid-State Conference swimming and diving title convincingly, breaking three meet records and crowning conference champions in 11 of 12 events Friday, Oct. 26 in Park Rapids.

Diving was held in the early session with three Lakers finishing in the top four positions led by conference champ Lexi Yliniemi’s 443.60 winning point total. She finished less than eight points off former teammate Emma Disse’s pool and meet scoring record of 451.20 points set in 2014. Jackson Hegg (379.10) and Kennedy Hegg (315.5) placed third and fourth, respectively.

The Lakers opened and closed the swimming portion of the meet with record relay performances.

The 200 Medley team of Josi Retz, Syd Gulon, Jennifer Tracy and Lucy Steinke cut a new meet record by 17-hundredths of a second winning in 1:56.02. The former mark was held by the Panthers’ 2015 team (1:56.19).

With the team competition well in hand, DL’s 400-freestyle relay team of Tracy, Kaitlyn Peterson, Steinke and Gulon finished off the meet beating a record set by the 2017 Lakers winning in 3:47.47. Tracy, Steinke and Gulon were on last year’s record-setting squad (3:48.22) with Ella Henderson.

DL’s 400 B team of Evan Westrum, Maddie Henderson, Retz and Chelsy Johnson placed second touching in 4:05.85.


Tracy had the third meet record of 2:13.46 in claiming the 200-IM conference title. She broke her own mark set last year by more than two seconds (2:15.64). She was two-hundredths off her 2017 pool record in Park Rapids (2:13.44). The Lakers’ sophomore standout just missed breaking former Laker Melissa Paakh’s 2007 100-fly record of 58.91 swimming a winning time of 58.96.

Evan Westrum was the runner-up (1:04.89) Lexi Gerdes was the runner-up in the IM (2:28.67).

Gulon won her first of two individual titles in the 500-free (5:24.24) leading a sweep of the top four finishes with Peterson (5:42.57), Hamm (5:56.77) and Ellie Staley (6:00.11).


Gulon’s second gold finish came in the 100-breaststroke (1:11.34) where DL captured four of the top five spots with runner-up Madi Gerdes (1:13.91) and Johnson (1:16.20) in fourth, Staley fifth (1:18.04).

Peterson was the 200-freestyle champion (2:04.59), joined on the podium with Hamm at runner-up (2:11.09).

DL had the top two 100-freestyle finishers in champion Steinke (57.59) and runner-up Johnson (58.48).

Retz and Irene Mursu reached the 100-backstroke podium, Retz the champion in 1:07.10. Mursu grabbed a bronze finish touching in 1:10.78.

The Lakers swept all three relays winning the 200-free in 1:46.55 with Johnson on the lead split, followed by Evan Westrum, Henderson and Peterson.


Park Rapids sophomore Ellie Ulvin negated a Laker sweep of all 12 conference championships winning the 50-free in 25.89 and beating out two Lakers: Steinke in second place (26.25) and Evan Westrum (26.68) in third.

DL scored 569 team points to the Panthers’ 355 in second place.

The Lakers will enter their tapering phase until the Section 8A championships Nov. 9-10 in Warroad looking for state meet qualifications there and knocking off the seven-time defending section team champs from Bemidji.
