Sophomore Jennifer Tracy and senior Syd Gulon will compete individually in the Class A state swimming championship finals Friday, Nov. 16, along with consolation finals appearances by the 200-medley and 400-freestyle relay teams.
Gulon, seeded seventh in the 500-freestyle, was the runner-up in a competitive heat and earned seventh place (5:12.72) overall to claim her spot in the finals. The top eight swimmers advance; places ninth through 16th advance to consolation finals.
Gulon recorded her second heat runner-up finish and second championship place in the 100-breaststroke finals with a preliminary swim of 1:06.60 - good for fifth place - an excellent finish considering she was seeded 11th.
Tracy, ranked eighth in the butterfly, finished second in her heat and seventh overall to move into the championship finals. Seeded 21st in the individual medley, she made a big jump to the consolation finals placing 12th in prelims with a time of 2:12.95.
Both swimmers will also advance in relays with senior teammate Josie Retz, junior Lucy Steinke and sophomore Kaitlyn Peterson.
DL’s 200-medley team of Retz, Gulon, Tracy and Steinke came into their qualifier seeded 18th and finished 13th in the opening race of prelims with a time of 1:52:48 to qualify for the consolation finals.
The 12th-seeded 400-freestyle relay team of Gulon, Steinke, Peterson and Tracy finished third in their qualifying heat (3:39.15) and 10th overall to qualify for Friday’s B finals. Sauk Centre nabbed eighth place and a spot in the finals with a time of 3:38.44.
Individually, Peterson bumped up one position from her 200-freestyle seed with a 21st place time of 2:01.32. She also finished 22nd (5:35.07) in the 500-free. Sophomore Evan Westrum held her position with a 22nd place 100-fly swim of 1:03.85. Freshman Madi Gerdes swam 1:14.24 to place 22nd in the 100-breaststroke.
