The Detroit Lakes boys team finished in second place behind five event wins and two relay victories at the ROCORI Ed Babcock Track and Field Invitational Tuesday, April 16 at William J. Virant Field in Cold Spring.
The Lakers accumulated 136.5 points to finish 25 points up on third place St. Cloud Apollo and behind only Willmar with 172.5.
Isaiah Thompson ran 15.60 to win the 110m hurdles. Thompson nearly swept hurdles placing second in the 300m race by 0.13 seconds with a time of 43.66 bested by only Willmar’s Brady Krupa in 42.53.
Senior Tanner Olson placed first by just under two seconds in the 1,600m run crossing in 4:49.97.
Reed Reller won the 400m dash in 52.91.
Caleb Tangen threw 121-07 to win the discus throw with teammate Brock Harrier in third place (118-00).
Jake Bettcher notched a field victory winning the triple jump (39-06.25). Avery Walz was third (38-09.50).
All four relay teams had strong finishes.
The 4x200m relay team sprinted to victory in a time of 1:34.56, as did the 4x400 team in 3:36.07. The boys 4x800 team (8:57.19) placed second behind Willmar (8:41.38). The 4x100 team ran a second place time of 46.51. Apollo won the race in 45.42.
Three Lakers placed in the top five shot put results. Charles Barnett led the way in second place with a throw of 44-06; Harrier was one spot back in third (42-11) and Caleb Tangen finished fifth at 39-05.
Laker girls pick up relay win, two individual titles
Willmar swept both meets scoring 183 points to defeat the host Spartans by more than 30 points in the girls standings. Detroit Lakes scored 75.3 points to place fourth in front of Apollo and 34 points out of third place held by Fergus Falls with 109.3 points.
Laker sophomore Gabby Fredrickson cleared five-feet to win the high jump and added a fourth place long jump of 14-10.25..
Senior Breanna Price beat the discus field, including four Willmar throwers in second to fifth place, with a throw of 124-07 and placed fifth in the shot put (32-09), four-feet off the lead throw of Haley Joos of St. Cloud Apollo (36-09.5).
The 4x400m team picked up the team’s third victory of the meet running a winning time of 4:14.95..
The 4x100 team ran 53.46 to finish in second place narrowly defeated by Fergus Falls (53.40).
Jordyn Johnson was the triple jump runner-up (31-10.5) behind only Willmar’s Erica Schramm (32-09). Johnson (4-10) placed fourth in high jump behind Fredrickson’s win.
Two Laker girls placed top six in the 200m dash. Sasha Sekundiak finished fourth (28.01); Anne Paulson was sixth (28.13).
