Spring Lake Park high school has been a friendly arena for the Detroit Lakes boys track and field team as the Lakers placed first for the third consecutive season at the Don Fineran Panther Invitational Friday, April 26.

Detroit Lakes put up 224 points to defeat the host Panthers in second place with 161 in a field of five other Class AA teams and St Croix Preparatory Academy from Class A.

Five different Lakers nabbed individual victories

Jake Bettcher led the way with a 300m hurdles victory (43.89) and a field win taking the triple jump (40-09.00).

The Lakers swept the top three 800m places led by Grant Fritch-Gallatin, 2:10.52 and followed by Tanner Olson, 2:14.11 and Peyton Nordby 2:14.14.

Isaiah Thompson completed a sweep of hurdles winning the 110m race in 16.27.

Caleb Tangen threw 125-05 to place first in the discus throw and Tanner Olson added a distance running win crossing the 1,600m finish in 4:50.55.

The Lakers also won three of four relay races: (4x1, 45.59; 4x2, 1:34.94; 4x8, 8:58.94).

DL throwers took three of the top four in shot put led by Charles Barnett (44-06.00) in second place, Brock Harrier (43-04.50) in third and Caleb Tangen (41-10.00) in fourth.

Harrier (121-09) and Barnett (104-10) placed third and fifth behind Tangen’s discus win.

Bettcher (5-08.00) and Martin Mai (5-06.00) placed third and fifth in the high jump.

Ben Heimark (38-08.00) placed third in triple jump behind Bettcher’s win.

Christian Solberg (11-00) and Will Green (10-00) placed two-three in pole vault.

Solberg (19-10.50) and Heimark (19-05.75) went three-four in long jump.

Michah Solberg added a third place 400m dash finish in 55.66. Green took third in the 100m dash (11.73).

Behind Olson’s 1,600m victory, Peyton Nordby (4:59.67) placed third. In the two-mile, Elijah Kitzmann (11:01.10) placed third, Tucker Strawsell (11:06.74) fourth.

Both DL teams combined for 61 personal best marks 33 from the boys and 28 recorded by girls.

The DL girls scored 136.5 points to place second behind Spring Lake Park’s 255.

Kaitlin McConkey led the Lakers with an 800m run victory in 2:37.51 and a runner-up finish in the 1,600m (5:56.67).

Jacee Hauser took the top spot in place of Breanna Price in discus throw and won the event with a toss of 93-01. Hope Hanson (89-02) placed third, Elle Bettcher (87-02) fourth.

Price was the lone Laker competing at Friday’s Hamline Elite Meet placing sixth with a discus throw of 124-03 in a field of 10 seniors and three juniors. Michaela Hawkins of Roseville Area won the event with a throw of  146-09, 13-feet better than the next competitor.

DL relay teams picked up two Fineran wins capturing the 4x200 in 1:49.10 and the 4x400 in 4:17.25.

Three Lakers posted runners-up marks: Jackson Hegg (9-06) in the pole vault; Karrigan Hallisey (15-09) in the long jump and Brina Smith (33-10.50) in the triple jump.

Sasha Sekundiak (27.75) placed third in the 200m, as did Jalynn Gunderson (1:08) in the 400m run.

DL returns to Mollberg Field for the first of the three home meets beginning with the Craig Fredrickson Invitational Thursday, May 2.
