The Moorhead Spuds swept both boys and girls competitions for a second straight season at the annual Craig Fredrickson Memorial Invitational at Mollberg Field Thursday, May 2.
The Laker boys and Spuds battled to a nine-point difference with Moorhead getting the victory by scoring 146 points to DL’s 137. Frazee was the top Class A team at the meet placing third with 80 points in a field of seven.
The Lakers scored in team fashion with only two event winners in junior Elijah Kitzmann running a first place time of 10:37.40 to take the 3,200m run and senior Reed Reller crossing in 52.58 to win the 400m dash.
Frazee had a pair of victories with senior Joby Giefer taking the 110m hurdles in 15.88, the lone runner to best Laker senior Jake Bettcher in second place (17.79).
Giefer was a standout on the track and in the field for the Hornets placing second in the 300m hurdles (44.15) and adding a fifth place high jump of 5-06.
Fellow senior Vincent Helmers notched a Frazee shot put victory with a throw of 52-05. Lakers’ Brock Harrier (43-06) and Charles Barnett (42-01) placed third and fifth, respectively.
Helmers was also the discus throw runner-up (133-06). DL’s Caleb Tangen (124-05) placed fourth.
In relays, DL and Frazee (Cole Fleisher, Joby Geifer, Caleb Wutzke, Coleton Borah) finished one-two in the 4x200 with the Lakers winning in 1:34.79 and the Hornets next to finish in 1:38.25.
The Lakers also won the 4x400 in a time of 3:37.52. Frazee’s foursome of Christian Petron, Alex Beck, Cole Fleisher and Caleb Wutzke placed third in a time of (3:41.52).
DL’s Will Green (11.83) and Isaiah Thompson (11.87) went two-three in the 100m dash. Teammate Ben Heimark put three Lakers in the top five with a fifth place sprint of 12.02. Thompson added a third place time in the 200m dash (24.00).
Local runners grabbed three of the top five 800m times: DL’s Tanner Olson was the runner-up (2:08.65), with Frazee’s Alex Beck (2:09.65) in fourth and Laker Martin Mai in fifth (2:10.62).
Olson added a second runner-up finish in the 1,600m run crossing the finish in 4:44.90. Frazee’s Christian Carlson (4:50.07) placed fourth followed by DL’s Peyton Nordby (4:51.16) in fifth.
Laker long jumpers grabbed second through fourth place led by Jackson Rhodes (20-05), Heimark (19-03) and Christian Solberg (18-09.50). Solberg had the area’s top pole vault mark of 11-feet to place fifth.
Bettcher was the triple jump runner-up (39-10.50) with Frazee’s Cole Fleisher (39-04) in third place.Laker girls third, Hornets sixth
Detroit Lakes was led by the sisterly duo of Breanna Price (125-06) winner of the discus throw and third place Kylee Price (103-00.50). Price’s throw was the lone win for the third place Lakers. She also placed fourth in the shot put (32-08).
DL scored 81 team points for third place. Frazee accumulated 61.5 to place sixth. Moorhead won the meet with 163 points followed by runners-up Fergus Falls (100.5).
Hornet runners continued a very strong hurdles season posting victories in both races. Paige Ziegler won the 100m in 16.29 with teammate Rylee Moore (18.24) in fifth place. DL’s Sidney Lundberg (18.03) placed fourth.
Jaryn Johannsen (48.13) won the 300m hurdles race. DL’s Austria Lackowitzer crossed in 50.27 to finish fourth.
DL’s Sasha Sekundiak (1:00.92) was the 400m runner-up.
Frazee’s Paige Oswald (27.55) placed third in the 200m dash.
Hornet senior Megan Danielson (5:40.00) was the 1,600m runner-up and placed fourth in the 800m run in a time of 2:35.48.
DL’s Abby Larson (13.53) nabbed fourth place in the 100m dash.
The Lakers’ Gabby Fredrickson had a strong meet in the field placing second in the high jump at five-feet and fourth in the long jump (15-02.25).
Rylee Moore cleared 32-10.75 to lead the Hornets in triple jump. DL’s Annie Paulson (32-07.75) was third followed by teammate Brina Smith (32-07) in fourth.
DL’s top relay came in the 4x400 with a second place time of 4:14.87. Frazee’s top effort (Oswald, Ziegler, Johannsen, Ellie Reierson) was in the 4x200 with a time of 1:50.74.
According to head coach Jim Jacobson, the Frazee girls team recorded 17 season-best performances.
Both teams will be competing in their respective Section True Team meets next week. Detroit Lakes hosts the Section 8AA meet Tuesday, May 7 beginning at noon. Frazee travels to the Section 6A meet in Pelican Rapids the same day with competition beginning at 10 a.m.
