The Detroit Lakes boys track and field team captured the Section 8AA True Team championship at Mollberg Field, Tuesday, May 7 ensuring a fifth consecutive state meet appearance.

“I was really proud of our guys yesterday,” DL boys head coach Bill Kvebak said. “They just came to work and really handled their business. I think a lot of their composure in big meets can be attributed to our seniors; they really set the attitude for our team and led us through this meet like they have all season.”

The Lakers got event victories from three different grades.

Junior Isaiah Thompson bested the 110m hurdles field with a winning time of 15.77.

Senior Reed Reller recorded a winning time of 51.80 in the 400m dash.

Freshman Caeden Yliniemi cleared 5-10 to win the high jump.

Senior Jake Bettcher added a number of complementary finishes in both the field and on the track.

He placed third in the 110m hurdles behind Thompson and was the 300m hurdles runner-up.

“Jake had a huge day in the hurdles” Kvebak said. “He has only run each race once this year and is taking on this role to support the team.”

Bettcher also placed seventh in the high jump with a leap of 5-06 and third in the triple jump (41-00.25).

Reller’s win was aided by junior Micah Solberg with a sixth place 400m dash, a finish he completed with little warning prior to running.

“A result that may not jump out on paper was Micah Solberg, who subbed in for the open 400 and set a PR by over a second,” Kvebak said. “He didn't know he would be running but was ready and really handled his race well.”

Senior Will Green and junior Ben Heimark were spring standouts.

Green placed second in the 100m dash (11.60) with Heimark (11.66) right behind him in third place.

In the True Team format, each team is allowed two entries in individual events and one entry in each relay. Results are scored in descending order from first to last. First place relay finishes scored 33 points, last place three. First place individuals earned 22 points to last place two.

Green and Heimark had top seven marks in the 200m dash. Green ran 23.56 to place fifth; Heimark took seventh one-tenth of a second behind. Heimark added a seventh place triple jump finish (38-02.50).

Junior Jackson Rhodes (20-06.50) and Thompson (20-01.25) went four-five in long jump.

Freshman Christian Solberg (11-00) and Green (10-06) went four-five in pole vault.

“Will Green was a stud yesterday, leading our 4x100 team to their fastest finish of the year (45.13) and placing real well in both the 100, 200, and pole vault,” Kvebak said. “Awesome day by our kids; it was really fun.”

Laker relays posted one first, two seconds and a fifth place finish to rack up 104 points of DL’s winning total of 603. Detroit Lakes finished exactly 100 points ahead of runners-up Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton.

Junior Brock Harrier placed fifth in the shot put with senior Charles Barnett in seventh.

Junior Caleb Tangen led the discus throwers placing fifth with Harrier in 10th.

DL distance runners all had top eight marks.

Juniors Grant Fritch-Gallatin and Peyton Nordby went seven-eight in the 800m run.

Senior Tanner Olson placed fifth in the mile with Nordby in eighth.

Olson finished fourth in the two-mile and junior Elijah Kitzmann was seventh.

Detroit Lakes boys history at state True Team dates back to the inaugural year, 1987, when the Lakers won the Class 3A state championship, the first-ever state team title in Detroit Lakes’ athletic history. That team has since been inducted into the Detroit Lakes Athletic Foundation's Hall of Honor.

This year’s squad is making the program’s sixth appearance at state and fifth in the last six seasons.

Last year’s sixth place finish was the second-best mark by a DL team and was done for the fourth time in team history. DL placed ninth in 2015.

The Willmar Cardinals repeated as Section 6AA champions and will be defending the state AA boys championship at the upcoming state meet Saturday, May 18 at Stillwater high school beginning at 3 p.m.

Freshman Sasha Sekundiak continued to impress this season recording the lone Laker victory winning the 400m dash in a time of 1:00.48. Her eighth-grade teammate Jalynn Gunderson placed eighth overall in 1:04.31.

Sekundiak was joined by a trio of eighth graders in sprints with top 10 marks.

Two girls meet records were broken at Tuesday’s meet. Perham senior and defending AA state pole vault champion Ashley Hokanson cleared a new record mark of 12-feet. She broke her own record of 11-feet from 2018.

Fergus Falls junior Sabrina Fronning placed first and set a new mark of 15.26 in the 100m hurdles breaking the 2013 record of Thief River Falls’ and current University of Minnesota redshirt sophomore hurdler Meleah Biermaier by two-tenths of a second.

DL senior Sidney Lundberg had a top 10 finish behind Fronning placing ninth (18.45).

Sophomore Kaitlin McConkey led Laker distance runners placing 11th in the 800m and seventh in the mile. Junior Ava Geffre was the to two-miler in 11th place.

Senior Karrigan Hallisey (15-04.50) finished in the top half of the long jump field in ninth place.
