The Perham Yellowjackets swept singles en route to a 5-2 boys tennis victory over Detroit Lakes in Perham Thursday, May 9.
Perham singles players were stingy allowing only three games to DL in three quick matches. Tommy Fritz battled to a 7-5 first set loss to Perham’s Gunnar Anderson before Anderson took the second set at love.
Detroit Lakes’ strength this season has been in doubles and the top duo of Gabe Hanninen and Trey Seebold were in a groove taking out Perham’s top pairing 6-4, 6-0. Both players were strong at the net and imposed power from their groundstrokes to set up easy points in the victory.
“Matches against Perham are always competitive and high intensity,” said DL head coach Zach Biggar. “We had a tale of two types of matches. In singles, we had a hard time getting some momentum and putting points together. It seemed like we would hit some good shots but couldn't capitalize throughout the game. In doubles, we played very well and almost pulled out all three matches.”
Nate Cihak and Connor Zamzo have been a good match of young underclassmen and the Lakers No. 2 team responded from a first set tiebreak loss to get the second set 6-4 and post the win with a 10-6 push in the third set breaker.
“I was really impressed with Connor and Nate,” Biggar said. “They lost a close first set in a tiebreaker and went down 0-3 in the second set. On the change over at 0-3 I ended our talk with, ‘You win the next two, you are back in this set.’ They did exactly that and just never looked back. They went up 5-4 and closed the door and pushed their match to a third set. They picked each other up and celebrated each point they won. They played as a team setting each other up at the net. That was an impressive thing for any player, especially a ninth grader and an eighth grader.”
Landon Stevens and Michael Schwantz of Perham picked up an extra break of serve in each set of a 7-5, 6-4 win at three-doubles over DL’s Caden Smith and Jordan Fields.
