Detroit Lakes junior Isaiah Thompson qualified for the Class AA state track and field championships in the 110m hurdles and will polish off one of the best individual three-season stretches in Laker athletic history this coming weekend.

Thompson placed third at sections in the 110, not gaining an automatic state bid by finishing in the top two but eclipsing the standard time of 14.91 qualifying with 14.74.

Four runners advanced out of the final group of eight. Becker’s David Myres defended his section title winning in 14.65. Zach Kenke of Brainerd just nipped Thompson with a time of 14.73 and fourth place Jacob Kelly of Bemidji advanced with a 14.82.

Last fall, Thompson set the single season career rushing record in football leading the Lakers to the section final. He was named the co-All-District player of the year and erupted into the top 10 all-time Laker rushers. He is currently sixth, 1,299 yards away from Corey Brogren’s school record 3,933.

This winter, Thompson continued an two-year unbeaten streak at state wrestling capturing his second state championship finishing his junior season with an overall record of 45-3.

The Lakers will have one state entrant for the second straight season. Jay Nielsen represented DL in 2018 winning the discus throw state title.

Senior Reed Reller moved up from a preliminary finish of eighth to place sixth in the 400m dash in 52.96.

Junior Peyton Nordby (2:08.45) and Senior Tanner Olson (2:12.01) flipped their prelim finishes in the 800m run with Nordby moving up from eighth to sixth and Olson finishing his Laker career with an eighth place finish. Nordby added a top 10 finish in the 1,600m running 4:47.54 to place 10th.

Junior Garret Bakken placed eighth in the 100m dash running a time of 11.59.

Freshman Caeden Yliniemi cleared 5-10 to finish eighth in the high jump.

Jackson Rhodes recorded a long jump of 19-10 to place 10th.

Junior Jackson Hegg finished tied for fourth place in pole vault to earn the top DL girls finish clearing 9-07. All but champion Isabelle Albers of Foley failed to clear 9-10. Albers won the event clearing 10-01 in her first attempt.

Hegg was in competition to finish her junior year in lofty territory making state appearances in all three seasons.

She placed 18th in state diving during the fall and was the uneven bars state champion in gymnastics during the winter season.

Freshman Annie Paulson ran 1:01.30 to record the top girls track finish placing sixth in the 400m dash. She also had the top triple jump finishing 15th (32-04).

The girls 4x400 relay team placed eighth in 4:18.45.

The DL boys finished 11th in team results scoring 27 points. Moorhead claimed the section title with 132. The Laker girls scored 12.5 points to finish 12th overall. Alexandria won the 8AA team title handily scoring 155 points.

Thompson will compete in the 110m hurdles prelims which are scheduled for 9:42 a.m. Friday, June 7 at Hamline University in St. Paul. The finals are Saturday at 10:02 a.m.
