Northfield sophomore pitcher Brynn Hostettler allowed Detroit Lakes only one hit as the No. 2 Raiders defeated Detroit Lakes 10-0 in six innings in the quarterfinal round of the Minnesota Class AAA state softball tournament in North Mankato Thursday, June 6.

The Lakers threatened to score in their first at-bats when Laura Prussia was hit by pitch and Mercedez Bellanger walked. The duo pulled off the double steal to get into scoring position with two outs but Hostettler fanned Autumn Kulik to end the threat.

“We knew we had a dominant pitcher; we had to scrap together one or two runs and one bloop single and it’s a 3-1 game,” said DL head coach Phil Kirchner. “That’s a well-coached team, a great pitcher and we have to be perfect to win games down here. We didn’t deserve this one. We need to bounce back next game and get our bats going.”

Anne Fossum hit a two-RBI single to score Payton Fox in the bottom half of the inning to give Northfield a 1-0 lead.

Jillian Noel belted a two-run home run to deep centerfield off Laker starter Madilyn Kirchner in the third inning to put the Raiders up 3-0.

DL’s best chance to score came in the top of the sixth when Kirchner put down a bunt and reached on a throwing error charged to Hostettler. Prussia was hit by pitch and both moved up a bag on a sacrifice bunt by Kulik.

“This is state tournament softball; if you can’t hit, you have to bunt,” coach Kirchner said

Hostettler got out of trouble again striking out pinch hitter Heather Haarstick to retire the Lakers.

The Raiders took advantage of a Laker error, four walks and scored seven runs on five hits in the bottom of the sixth to end the game by mercy rule.

Detroit Lakes was unable to capitalize on scoring opportunities, had a pair of missed outs in the field and were thrown out stealing twice in the game. Madilyn Kirchner had the only DL hit, a perfectly placed bunt to the left of first base.

“We got thrown out a couple times,” said coach Kirchner. “I think we bounce back and get the bats going we’ll have a chance next game.”

Hostettler was dominant striking out 14 DL batters.

Detroit Lakes (17-7) will face Mahtomedi (13-9-1) in the consolation bracket. Northfield takes on No. 3 Becker in semifinals. Becker (20-5) defeated Mahtomedi 5-4 to advance.
