Thursday, July 4 marked the end of the 2019 USA Taekwondo National Championships hosted for the first time in many years in Minnesota at the Minneapolis Convention Center.  

Local athletes from Detroit Lakes and surrounding areas trained all year for this event with head coach Lucas Holzhueter and his assistant coaches to get ready for the USA Taekwondo Nationals which had 5,229 athletes and coaches in attendance making it the largest Taekwondo tournament in the world.

This year representing Detroit Lakes and the state of Minnesota were Trey Martodam, Rachel Wagoner, Laura Wagoner, Davin Abraham. Maddie Volesky, and Benno Sullivan.

Ms. Maddie Volesky and Mr. Davin Abraham brought home their first National Gold medals in Sparring.

Mrs. Laura Wagoner of Wagoner Portrait Studios made her Nationals debut and brought home a silver in Breaking destroying 23 boards in 2 minutes. 

Other members who train with the Legacy Total Martial Arts Sparring team headquartered in Detroit Lakes also had success: Kiersten Brennan (St. Cloud) Silver in Sparring; Dani Gathright (Mandan, ND) Silver in Sparring, Cody Burilson (Grand Rapids) second Sparring, Abby Kalina (Bemidji) Gold in Breaking, Philomena Mack (Bemidji) Silver in Sparring/Gold in Breaking, and Angie Doughty (Pequot Lakes) Bronze Sparring.
