Kate Smith fired a one-under-par 143 over two rounds to sit in a tie for 10th after the opening day of the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., on Monday.

Smith, a senior from Detroit Lakes, Minn., carded a one-under-par 71 in the opening round before adding an even-par 72 on the 6,317-yard layout of the UNM Championship Course. For the day, Smith produced 27 pars, five birdies and four bogeys. She was one of 13 golfers in the talented 87-player field to finish better than par through the first 36 holes.

Pepperdine's Alexa Melton heads into Tuesday's final round with a seven-under 137 (69-68), six shots ahead of Smith. Three other golfers are two shots back of Melton at 139, including Indiana's Priscilla Schmid, Rei Nakatani from UC Davis and San Diego State's Gioia Carpinelli.

Smith helped Nebraska to back-to-back rounds of 299 to open its fall season, closing the day in 12th place at 598 in the 15-team field. The Huskers ended the second round ahead of Idaho (600), Iowa (601) and Colorado State (610).

Pepperdine owns a one-shot lead in the team standings at 569, just ahead of Kent State (570) and Ole Miss (571), while San Diego State and Iowa State are tied for fourth at 579.

Sophomore Megan Whittaker (Elkhorn, Neb.) put up Nebraska's second-best individual performance on Monday, shooting rounds of 74 and 76 to close at 150. Whittaker heads into Tuesday's final round in a tie for 48th.

Senior Haley Thiele (Wahoo, Neb.) added rounds of 77 and 75 to close the day at 152 in a tie for 62nd. True freshman Leah Herzog (Red Wing, Minn.), playing in her first collegiate tournament, produced rounds of 77 and 76 to sit one shot back of Thiele at 153 in a tie for 68th.

Sophomore Vanessa Bouvet (Brunei) rounded out the Husker contingent with back-to-back rounds of 80.
