The Detroit Lakes tennis team went into Tuesday's Bemidji quadrangular undefeated taking on the host Lumberjacks, Staples-Motley and East Grand Forks but left with a three-pack of close losses at the conclusion of play.

The Lakers opened against Bemidji in a battle of unbeaten teams. The Jacks are a top-two team in the 8AA subsection and proved it defeating the Lakers 5-2.

Shelby Busker and Josey Allen picked up the Laker victories at two and three singles. No. 1 Brina Smith forced tiebreakers in each set against Savannah Haugen in a 7-6, 7-6 defeat. The Jacks took four singles and all three doubles matches in straight sets.

"We played them really tough and it is a good sign that we can compete with the best teams in our subsection," said DL head coach Tanner Beauchman. "In the end, Bemidji had too much firepower. Shelby and Josey picked up nice wins. They controlled their matches from start to finish. Brina battled one of the top girls in our subsection which is a good sign for the upcoming individual section tournament. Bemidji's doubles teams were really good. It took us a few games to adjust the pace of the game Bemidji executed."

Haugen won all three of her matches on the day, as did Bemidji.

Both Laker contests against East Grand Forks and Staples-Motley were decided by one match in 4-3 losses.

The Green Wave were state qualifiers last season and the Lakers split the four singles matches with Busker and Allen again providing wins. All three matches went the distance.

"That shows how close we were," said Beauchman. "Shelby and Josey did a great job of battling back after losing the first set."

Chloe Will and Siri Vagle only gave up two games in DL's lone victory in doubles.

"Chloe and Siri played a great match at two-doubles," Beauchman said. "In the end, we just got outplayed down the stretch. East Grand Forks won a lot of big points towards the end of matches. We could have easily won or lost this one 5-2."

The Cardinals swept the top three singles matches and sealed the match with a one-doubles victory.

Vagle had the only singles victory for DL against Staples-Motley defeating Allison Knossalla 6-2, 10-7 after dropping the first set 6-1.

The Lakers two and three-doubles tandems also picked up wins.

Mary Nelmark and Will defeated Georgia Kruchten and Keara Kern four and four.

Marit Engum and Mya Anderson cruised against Amy Rollins and Katie Smith love and one.

"Siri showed a lot of mental toughness gutting out a close match at four-singles," said Beauchman. "Our two and three doubles teams looked really good. We adjusted our lineup a bit, dropping Mary to two-doubles, and they delivered a win for us. Staples' top three singles players are really good. We battled but in the end Staples earned three big wins at the top of the singles lineup."

Detroit Lakes plays Thief River Falls at home Friday, Sept. 13 at 4 p.m. and continues a streak of seven matches in five days with the Mid-State Conference tournament in Wadena and Perham Saturday, Sept. 14.
