Detroit Lakes wrapped up the boys soccer regular season with a fifth victory after defeating Hillcrest Lutheran Academy 4-0 in wet and muddy conditions at Rotary Soccer Park Thursday, Oct. 3.

The Lakers scored twice in the final two minutes of the first half to break open a 1-0 game by halftime.

Josh Brahmer scored with a header off a Thomas Fritz corner kick to the backdoor for the lead 19 minutes into the game.

Austin Miller had a pair of scoring chances in front of the net but was denied by Comet keeper Zajen McArton in the first of a few run-ins between the two players.

Miller set up the Lakers’ second goal after earning a penalty kick after a collision with McArton.

Captain Garrett Bakken took the kick and beat McArton to the upper right corner for a 2-0 lead.

In the final minute, Kobe Braukmann put the game on ice from long range.

Braukmann dribbled from the sideline to midfield and launched a shot from 36 yards out beating the keeper to send the Lakers to the break up three goals.

Miller and McArton collided again in the second half with McArton leaving the pitch and Miller receiving a yellow card.

As a team, the Lakers were a much healthier club to start the game in terms of injured players compared to the prior meeting, a 5-3 overtime victory for the Comets in Fergus Falls in mid-September.

However, the injury bug showed up in the second half.

Bakken left with a hamstring injury late in the game. Fritz tweaked an ankle but was able to play if necessary. Tyler Wirtz left after going for a header and may be under concussion protocol.

Louis Terlau scored late in the game dribbling around three Comet defenders for the fourth and final goal.

Alec Kulasingham earned the shutout in net for DL (5-8).

Bemidji, Pelican Rapids and Alexandria will vie for the top three seeds in Section 8A North. Hillcrest, East Grand Forks, Detroit Lakes, Fergus Falls will be close in QRF rankings for the four through seven seeds with Crookston in eighth place. Seeding will be completed Sunday, Oct. 6.
