Thief River Falls took control of a match of wild momentum swings downing Detroit Lakes 3-2 (28-30, 7-25, 25-17, 25-17, 15-6) in a come-from-behind victory Tuesday, Oct. 1 in Thief River Falls.
"Tough loss for us tonight," Laker head coach Lynnsey Machakaire said.
Detroit Lakes captured the first two sets winning the opener 30-28 in extra points and crushing the Prowlers 25-7 in the second set.
After a tie at 24, the Prowlers had one chance to win the set but failed. Detroit Lakes had four set points down the final stretch capturing the final two points after a timeout with the score tied at 28. Ava Jones served the winning points. Gabby Fredrickson set up set point with a kill through a Prowler block and Thief River Falls found the net trailing 29-28 to give the first set to DL.
The second set was all Lakers as DL looked prime for a sweep after allowing only seven points in the set to take a commanding 2-0 lead.
"We minimized our errors and dominated the set," Machakaire said.
The Lakers recorded 11 kills to one hitting error and had four aces and no service errors in the set.
Thief River Falls led 12-10 in the third set and used a five-point run to gain space on the scoreboard. From a 17-10 lead, the teams traded 15 points, eight to the home team, in a 25-17 victory to stay alive.
The Lakers had nine hitting errors and five service errors in the set to aid the Prowler effort.
The teams were close again in the fourth set with Thief holding an 18-15 lead. DL suffered hitting errors again only scoring two of the last nine points and went to a fifth set after a 25-17 Prowler victory.
With the match all-square, Thief River Falls jumped on the Lakers in the fifth securing the victory quickly 15-6.
The fifth was tied at one point each, but the Prowlers went on a 10-2 run to lead 11-3 and secured the comeback eight points later, wining five in that stretch.
"I made a coaching error in my lineup which didn't help the girls mentally, so I will take that one a bit on me," Machakaire said. "Thief River Falls fought hard and hit hard while we came softer than we could and they took the game from us gaining momentum on errors from our side."
Fredrickson led the Lakers in kills - the team had 40 in the match. Laura Prussia led the Lakers in serving; Ava Jones spurred the team's 40 assists. DL recorded 54 total digs led by Faith Keller in the back row and Jocelyn Patnaude led DL to seven team blocks.
"We have got to fix the errors and fight through those that are there," Machakaire said. "We have to go to utilize our players that are on without fully relying on them. We have to trust and push each other and we have seen glimpses from all of them."
The Prowlers snapped a two game losing streak improving to 6-8 overall. Detroit Lakes came in unbeaten in the past three matches falling to 8-6 overall. The Lakers continue a week of road trips playing the fourth of five Mid-State Conference matches at Aitkin Thursday, Oct. 3.
