Detroit Lakes swimmers collected nine event victories leading the Lakers to a second place finish at the Section 8A True Team championships in Grand Rapids Saturday, Oct. 12.

Of the nine victories, Chelsy Johnson’s 100-freestyle win was one of the big highlights of the meet, according to head coach Carol Fischer.

“Epic finishes from our 100 freestylers,” she said “A Big-Meet finish from Chelsy, who led her heat from the start in lane two and held on, as we know she can.”

Marin Westrum was next to touch for DL in sixth place. Jessica Bolar dropped 1.20 seconds off her entry time to place 10th overall and Becca Cannon dropped 0.70 seconds to place 23rd.

DL’s top 200 medley relay team of Lucy Steinke, Madi Gerdes, Jennifer Tracy and Evan Westrum was first to notch a victory (1:56.59).

The Lakers’ second team placed seventh (Marin Westrum, Ellie Staley, Cora Martin, Bolar). The C team of Rena McLeod, Brielle Dallman, Lexi Blake, Quinn Rogstad placed 23rd; The D team of Syd Miller, Carlee Zurn, Lori Freeman, and Sofia Gag finished 30th.

Laker 100-butterfly swimmers took three of the top four places with a one-two finish from Jennifer Tracy (1:00.86) and Evan Westrum (1:03.62) with Lexi Gerdes finishing fourth and Martin 14th.

DL had three of the top five 100-breaststroke finishes led by winner Madi Gerdes (1:11.7) with Evan Westrum in third (1:14.51) and Ellie Staley (1:16.45) in fifth. Brielle Dallman finished 29th with a personal best time of 1:37.09.

Kaitlyn Peterson (2:03.17) picked up her first of two victories in the 200-freestyle; she also won the 500-free in 5:36.48. Faith Hamm placed third in both events swimming 2:06.95 in the 200 and 5:54.53 in the 500. Both swimmers turned in season-best times in the 200.

Quinn Rogstad finished 18th with a time drop and Rena McLeod placed 21st in the 200.

Staley (6:07.64) turned in a season-best 500 time to finish in sixth and medal. Rogstad (6:49.77) finished 21st with one of her best times of the season.

Tracy took top honors in the individual medley swimming a time of 2:17.99. Lexi Gerdes placed fourth, Madi Gerdes 12th and Brielle Dallman 27th.

All four swimmers dropped time, according to Fischer.

The Lakers’ 200 freestyle relay A-squad of Evan Westrum, Steinke, Johnson and Peterson recorded a winning time of 1:44.56.

The B-squad (A. Gerdes, Martin, Bolar, Hamm) turned in impressive times to finish with a medal in sixth place (1:51.48).

The C-squad (Cannon, McLeod, Dallman, M. Gerdes) finished 17th and the D-squad (Gag, Miller, Wheeling, Blake) placed 27th.

The final Laker victory closed the meet in the 400 freestyle relay.

DL’s top team of Tracy, Johnson, Steinke and Peterson won by two seconds over Grand Rapids with a time of 3:50.88.

The B-squad (A. Gerdes, M. Westrum, Staley, Hamm) dropped a big six seconds off the entry time to place fourth in 4:04.27. The C-squad (McLeod, Rogstad, Blake, Cannon) finished 18th and the D-squad (Miller, Zurn, Freeman, Gag) placed 29th.

Jackson Hegg scored 379.80 points to lead a four-pack of DL divers placing fourth overall, followed by Kylie Tulius in 10th, Kaitlyn Anderson in 13th and Ava Morrison in 14th place.

Perham’s Dena Fischer won the event with 402.30 points.

Steinke led Laker backstrokers with a fourth place finish, Marin Westrum was 10th, Martin 20th and Miller 29th .

Johnson earned a seventh place medal in the 50-free as the top Laker finisher. Bolar finished 10th with a season-best time, Becca Cannon also finished with a season-best time in 24th place and Lexi Blake finished 27th.

Grand Rapids snapped a five-year Detroit Lakes run at the top of the section scoring 1,423.5 points. The Lakers battled conference rivals Park Rapids to a close race for second. The Lakers scored 1,261.5 to the Panthers 1,256.

All four finishes in the 400-free relay were key to keeping the edge in points. Park Rapids’ top team placed first and their second team ninth and all four teams compiled 178 points in the event to 160 for the Lakers.

Seven other section champion teams will join Grand Rapids at the Class A State True Team meet at the University of Minnesota Saturday, October 19 at noon. Four wild card teams will also compete: Hutchinson, Sauk Centre, Monticello and Melrose Area.

Total points was used as criteria for the wild cards. Detroit Lakes was 22nd in overall scoring, including the eight championship teams statewide.
