The host Spartans swept the ROCORI Dance Invitational Saturday Jan. 11 while Detroit Lakes placed third in Jazz and sixth in High Kick amidst another field of Section 4AA teams.
Nine of the 10 teams were from 4AA with 3AA Hutchinson also competing.
The nine teams comprise more than half of the section field of 16 teams.
The Laker Jazz team continues to put up strong finishes in 2020 against 4AA competitors.
The Jazz team followed up a win at Alexandria and a third place mark at Willmar with a third place finish accruing 10 rank points behind ROCORI (4) and St. Cloud Tech (5).
Top three is key as each section sends three teams to state.
Proud of our performances at the Rocori Invite up against many of our section competitors! We saw many advances in all of our teams and we’re excited to keep improving br>— DL Laker Dance Team (@LakerDanceTeam) January 12, 2020

The Lakers received ranks of 3 from three of the five judges, along with 4's from the remaining two. The high and low scores are tossed and the remaining three scores added for a final tally of 10.
The Lakers were awarded 317 out of a possible 500 points (10 categories, 50 possible points each) getting high marks of 34 in choreography creativity and visual effectiveness, along with difficulty of skills.
In a sport based on subjective judging, scoring can be a crap shoot at meets. To get the 317 point total, the five judges each ranged in scoring from 58 to 68 total points for DL's routine.
The High Kick team had rank points as high as 5 from two judges to go with a 6, 7.5 and 8 creating a sixth place score of 18.5 rank points.
DL scored 285/500 with the scoring more consistent ranging from totals of 54 to 60 from the judges.
The team's top category scores of 30 came in execution: placement and control, along with degree of accuracy.
The Jazz B Squad recorded a second place finish in a field of three teams.
Junior varsity Jazz finished 4th out of 10 teams. JV Kick was fifth out of seven squads.
The Lakers compete next at St. Michael/Albertville Saturday, Jan. 18 and host the city-wide Dance Show Monday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m.
