Detroit Lakes Nordic Ski teams finished sixth and ninth at the Section 8 championships hosted by Maplelag Resort in Callaway Tuesday, Feb. 4.

Sartell Cathedral and Little Falls captured the two boys state berths. Sartell Cathedral scored 381 points to defeat Little Falls by 18 points. The Flyers tied with Bemidji with matching scores of 363 points. Little Falls was awarded the second state berth by tiebreaker with a time differential with the Lumberjacks of less than half a second.

Zachary Nemeth finished in a combined freestyle and classic time of 25:48 to claim the individual section championship. Nemeth’s brother William was the runner-up 11 seconds off the pace.

Detroit Lakes placed sixth scoring 247 points, led by John Bergum in 33rd place (31:25) and Ryan Bergum in 36th place (32:08).

Noah Borah placed 43rd in 32:53 and Jacob Trout was 45th (33:09) to complete the Laker scoring finishes.

Moorhead freshman Abbie Ishaug (31:30) led the Spud girls to the program’s first section title in only the fifth year of competition for Moorhead. The Spuds scored 376 and were followed by Brainerd with 365 points, claiming the second state berth by one point over Alexandria.

The Laker girls placed ninth with 187 points led by freshman Kira Wolf (40:24)in 43rd place.

Lexi Gerdes (44:30) and Madi Gerdes (45:00) placed 54th and 55th, respectively. Maren Hoban (55:44) was 65th overall.

Boys individual qualifiers were: Nick Youso, Bemidji (27:17), Jack Lee, Moorhead (27:20), Logan Jensen, Bemidji (27:29), Nole Robertson, Brainerd (28:46), Louis Morrissey, Bemidji (28:49) and Tucker Henkes of Fergus Falls (28:58).

Girls advancing were runner-up Gwendoline Youso of Bemidji (31:59), Kaisa Bosek, Alexandria (32:18), Wren Scott-Lumbar, St. Cloud Tech (32:34), Bethany Miller (32:52) and Emma Reineke (33:58) of Alexandria and Mary Beth Mathews, Bemidji (33:59).

The state championship meet will be held Thursday, Feb. 13 at Giant’s Ridge in Biwabik.
