Detroit Lakes high school hosted “The Laker Liftoff,” its first ever Weightlifting meet Saturday, Feb. 20.
Competing in the Liftoff was junior Jordan Ehnert, sophomores Reece Johnson and Austin Schons, and freshmen Shawn Carey, Ross Hansen, Waylon Lekatz, and Will Martin.
The sport of Weightlifting consists of two lifts, the snatch and the clean and jerk.
These movements are highly technical and highly explosive, requiring a great degree of skill to perform. Each lifter gets a chance to attempt three snatches and three clean and jerks, according to coach Dylan Surface.
The best lift of each is added together to form a total. This total is compared against other weightlifters in the state to determine rankings.
In order to qualify for state, a top three minimum total must be achieved.
Three lifters were able to hit the top 3 minimum total in their weight class.
Carey totaled 107 kg to qualify in the 64 kg weight class and is ranked third in the state.
Schons totaled 139 kg and is ranked second in the state for the 81 kg weight class.
Martin totaled 146 kg and is ranked first in the state for the 96 kg weight class.
Coach Dylan Surface is excited about the opportunity these athletes have been given by competing in this meet.
“Competition breeds success,” Surface said. “While a lot of these lifters are training to be better athletes in other sports, it's safe to say they all found a new passion on Saturday with the sport of weightlifting. Everyone had a blast, and at the end of the day, it’s about having fun.”
The Lakers next Weightlifting competition will be Saturday, March 20 at Moorhead High School, where Laker lifters will compete against Moorhead, Little Falls, West Fargo Sheyenne, and Kindred (ND).
