FRAZEE - The No. 2-seeded Frazee Hornets overcame a shaky start to sweep three straight sets and eliminate the No. 3 Wadena-Deer Creek Wolverines by a score of 3-1 Friday night in Section 8AA volleyball. Frazee senior outside hitter Kennady Barlund had a game-high 19 kills to lead the Hornet attack, which is chartering new territory in advancing to the Subsection final against Perham. “Frazee Hornet volleyball has never really come that far,” Barlund said. “It’s a big step for us. It’s amazing.” Barlund had six of 19 kills when it mattered most in the fourth set. “It was so fun,” she said. “Our passes really picked up that game. Our sets got me the ability to hit. It’s all my teammates and I’m just playing hard for them to.” Senior Josi Tappe served Frazee to a 4-0 lead in the fourth and the Hornets built on it to a 10-4 advantage. Two consecutive kills by Barlund put a dozen points on the board with an eight-point lead. Junior Whitney Janu and Barlund teamed up on consecutive kills to push the lead to 20-12. Three Wolverine comeback runs ended with Wadena-Deer Creek trailing by seven points. They would get no closer and Barlund put Frazee on the hill with a kill to bring match point at 24-17. “Kennady played awesome,” Frazee Head Coach Tavia Bachmann said. “She’s a senior. She’s a huge leader for us and she stepped up and did her role. She’s an outstanding player and that’s what you want from your seniors. She stepped up and helped her team out.”
Frazee won the fourth set 25-17 and the match 15-25, 25-12, 25-23, 25-17. “I’m so pumped,” said Barlund. “We’ve got so much heart and our whole school and community is behind us. I have no doubt in my mind we can go all the way.” The Wolverines played inspired volleyball early and cruised to a 10-point first set victory. Freshman Casey Volkmann scored a kill from the back row to give the Wolverines a 24-15 lead. Senior Jennifer Craig ended the first set on the next point. The Hornets played nervously in the first, but all the Wolverine momentum disappeared in set two. Frazee jumped ahead 6-1 and continually outscored W-DC to 24-11.
