DL baseball splits at home with EGF

Detroit Lakes used a three-run third inning to open a doubleheader with East Grand Forks with a 6-2 victory before the Green Wave responded in the nightcap winning 11-1 at Washington Park Tuesday, May 14.

Both teams got on the board early in the opener with the Lakers taking a 3-1 lead after a two out rally brought home Sully Wood and Jordan Tucker. Blake Itzen scored the third run on a RBI single by Blaine Henderson.

Tucker led off the third inning with a triple to the right-center gap. He scored on a sacrifice fly to centerfield by Ben Stearns.

Zack Oistad and Itzen followed with singles and a Henderson sacrifice bunt turned into a base hit to load the bags for Caleb Inwards.

Inwards worked a full count into a RBI base on balls and Dylan Maneval stretched the lead to 6-1 with a RBI single.

Cooper Hermanson was solid on the mound earning the victory. He pitched all seven innings, allowing two runs on five hits and fanned four.

Blake Itzen

Itzen was deuces wild at the plate with a pair of hits, two RBI and two runs scored.

Jake Osowski took the loss allowing six runs in six innings. He struck out seven.

In game two, DL took a 1-0 lead when Wood scored on a Stearns fielder’s choice but that was all the offense for the home team.

The Green Wave answered with five runs in the second inning, two more in the fourth and four in the fifth to seal the mercy rule victory.

Itzen took the loss throwing 1.2 innings with five runs allowed.

EGF (11-4) outhit DL 14-5; Evan Estad was 3-4 with five RBI.

Detroit Lakes is 7-9 overall heading into a section matchup with Bemidji (7-6) Monday, May 20 at home. The Lumberjacks eliminated the Lakers from the 8AAA playoffs last season.
