The Detroit Lakes Post 15 Junior Legion baseball team rebounded from a one-run loss in the opener to split a doubleheader with the Thief River Falls Bandits Wednesday, June 19 at Washington Park.

Detroit Lakes built a 3-0 lead with single runs in the first, third and four innings of the nightcap. All three runs came with two out in the inning.

Andrew Kulik doubled in Cooper Hermanson in the first.

Hermanson singled in Tanner Brend in the third.

Brend walked with the bases loaded to bring home Kulik in the fourth.

The Bandits got one run back off pitcher Blake Itzen in the sixth but Post 15 responded with a six-run home half of the inning to blow the game open on a double by Henderson and consecutive base hits by Dylan Maneval, Hermanson, Kulik and Logan Lund for the 9-1 final.

The Bandits were limited to four hits compared to a dozen by DL. Hermanson led all Post 15 batters going 3-3 with a walk, a pair of RBI and two runs scored.

Kulik, Lund and Henderson each had two hits.

Thief River Falls rallied in the opener scoring four runs in the final two innings to escape a potential sweep with a 6-5 win.

Kulik gave DL a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the seventh on a two-out single to score Henderson. Brend knocked in Kulik on a line drive single to right field for a 2-0 lead.

The Bandits returned the favor scoring twice in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly and a base hit to left field to tie the game.

Henderson doubled up the Bandits effort in the bottom of the third with a two-out single to right field bringing home Maneval and Zach Oistad for a 4-2 advantage.

The game remained that way until the Bandits’ half of the sixth when Thief River Falls took advantage of sketchy defense to plate three runs putting the Bandits up 5-4.

Brend tied the game at five scoring on a sinking Maneval line drive to left field forcing Bandit left fielder Zack Westlund to make a diving attempt on the ball that was ruled a trap.

Brandon Bruggeman scored the game-winner from third base on a passed ball from DL reliever Logan Lund in the seventh. Lund stranded a pair of base runners to get out of the threat.

Henderson walked with two away to put the tying run on base for Post 15 in DL’s final at-bats but Bandit starter Zach Myhrer polished off a complete game inducing a fly ball from Lund for the final out.

Detroit Lakes (2-4) will compete next in the KLN Highway 10 Classic tournament June 22-24.

The Highway 10 Baseball Classic in partnership with the Christopher Benz Foundation utilizes the American pastime of baseball to bring communities together for the prevention of suicide.

Post 15 opens play against Cherry Junior Legion Saturday, June 22 at 1 p.m. in Vergas. Four brackets of tournament games will be played in Perham, New York Mills, Dent and Vergas.
