Detroit Lakes Post 15 won three of four games at Washington Park during the Northwest Carnival American Legion wood bat baseball tournament last weekend.
“It was a successful Water Carnival tournament with record crowds,” said Post 15 head coach Phil Kirchner. “Thanks to all the fans, parents, volunteers and teams for making this a successful tournament.”
Post 15 opened with a pair of mercy rule victories defeating Hermantown 10-0 in six innings to open the tournament Friday, July 16. Detroit Lakes played two on the first day and finished off Duluth 12-2 in five innings in the nightcap.
DL’s third win came Saturday night in a shutout of Anoka 4-0 and the tournament concluded with an extra inning loss to Eastview 7-4.
Bradly Swiers pitched a complete game in the opener striking out six Hermantown batters over six innings.
Jordan Tucker, Zack Oistad, Trevor Schnathorst, Blaine Henderson and Swiers all recorded two hits each.
Detroit Lakes held a slim 3-2 lead after four innings against Duluth Lakeview, before a nine-run outburst in the fifth put the game away.
Tucker had a two-RBI single to score Schnathorst and Swiers to start the one out rally.
Oistad doubled Tucker home for a 6-2 lead and scored on an error in right field on a ball hit by Kyler Johnston.
DL polished off the game scoring unearned runs by Johnston, Landon Mousseau, a two-RBI single by Hunter Korth to plate Mason Omberg and Jake Bishop and the game-ender, a Schnathorst double to bring Korth home for the 12-2 final.
Logan Lund threw 95 pitches to get the five-inning victory. He allowed only three hits. Both runs were unearned; he fanned a pair and walked two.
The 4-0 victory over Anoka was scoreless until the fifth inning.
DL used small ball tactics to get on the scoreboard.
Schnathorst and Blaine Henderson got into scoring position at second and third base on an Andrew Kulik sacrifice bunt.
Schnathorst scored on a Swiers suicide squeeze for the lead.
Henderson was stellar on the mound, throwing a complete game one-hitter to stymie the Anoka (12-13) offense. He fanned six and did not allow a walk.
DL added three runs in the sixth on a Tucker triple that scored Omberg and Grady Kirchner. Tucker added the final tally coming home on a passed ball.
Next year’s tournament is scheduled for July 15-17.
Post 15 ends the regular season with an overall record of 20-13 heading into the postseason.
