East Grand Forks ran a full court press with eight players and transitioned into easy buckets to run away from the Hornets 73-37 in Section 8AA girls basketball at Frazee Thursday night.

East Grand started to pull away slowly as the first half progressed breaking a nine-all tie on the scoreboard with a 19-12 run to go up 28-21 at halftime. The Hornets made only one of six free throws during a crucial stretch leaving points off the board.

Carly Mahoney sank a big three late in the half to pull within five points trailing 26-21.

Frazee made all eight other attempts from the stripe and survived the constant pressure on both sides of the court to go to the locker room with a shot at an upset.

The Wave defense was even more stifling after halftime as East Grand went on a 20-8 run to push the lead to 48-29 quickly.

The defenders kept all of the Hornets off balance and would not allow Natalie Nudell an open look from three. Frazee’s long-rage threat was held to no baskets from behind the arc and off the scoreboard.

Loose balls bounced the way of the visitors and the rim was kind also. Chloe Torgerson had a three-point shot from the wing bounce three times on the rim and find a way into the hoop for a 59-31 advantage. By the five-minute mark, EGF led by 40 points and tapped the brakes down the stretch with a full substitution of the starters.

The Wave erupted for 45 second half points while holding the Hornets to 16.

EGF senior forward Brooke Filipi led all scorers with 21 points. Macy Skyberg added 13 and Haley Burger was in double figures with 11.

Mahoney led Frazee with a dozen points. Paige Ziegler added 10.

East Grand Forks improves to 7-1 on the season. The loss snaps a two-game win streak for Frazee as the Hornets fall to 3-5.
