Raider girls continue upward trends as season closes

The Lake Park-Audubon girls basketball season ended Thursday, March 1 on the road in a 65-42 loss at No. 2-seeded Pelican Rapids in the Section 6A playoffs.

The Vikings got out in front quickly leading 46-24 at halftime before tapping the brakes on the offensive end in the second half.

Pelican’s junior guard Kaylie Isaman led all scorers with 16 points. Freshman teammate Greta Tollefson scored 14 points. Both players scored all but two of their point totals in the first half of play.

LP-A eighth-grader Lily Peterson led the Raiders with 15 points. Maria Schauer added nine.

The Vikings improved to 18-9 overall after defeating Park Christian 46-35 in the next round. Pelican Rapids will face No. 1 Ada-Borup/Norman County West (25-2) in the north subsection championship game at the University of Minnesota-Morris Tuesday, March 6 at 6 p.m.

The teams met in the opening game of the season in Ada with the Cougars winning 58-46.

Despite the loss, the Raiders continued an upward trend teamwise and set a number of personal marks this season.

LP-A’s record of 11-16 is the best mark in four seasons which included the school record for points scored in a game, 89, in a victory at Bagley in late January.

The Raiders captured their first playoff victory in four years 76-44 over Hillcrest Lutheran Academy in Lake Park on Feb. 26.

The teams scoring average of 55 points per game is the highest in the past decade.

Individually, Maria Schauer scored 329 points, which ranked third in school history and had the third best single-game point total (31) in school history. Schauer averaged 12 points and eight rebounds per game.

Etta Miosek averaged 10 points and eight rebounds per game and had 43 blocks this season.

Lily Peterson averaged nine points per game and set a school record with 47 made three-pointers in a season on 37 percent shooting. She shot 73 percent from the free throw line and tied for second in school history for steals in a game with eight.

Kay Pederson set the school record for assists in a season (66) and assists in a game with eight. She tied for second in school history for steals in a game (8) and led the team with 69 steals this year.

Grace Bowers had the second most three-pointers in a season (44) on 29 percent shooting from the arc.

The Raiders return the entire starting lineup and a full roster next season. Schauer, Bowers and Jayda Swegarden will be the three returning seniors.
