Fergus Falls fends off DL boys

Victories against Section 8AAA teams have been tough to come by for Detroit Lakes this season and Fergus Falls kept that streak going in a tight 55-52 win over the Lakers in Fergus Falls Friday, Feb. 8.

The teams traded the lead eight times in a back-and-forth first half.

Nate Cihak drained a pair of free throws to give DL its last lead of the half 19-18 before Dominic Aguilar’s field goal put the Otters up by a point 20-19. DL led by as many as six points early in the half 13-7 after a Jacob Bettcher three. The Otters held a four-point lead twice and took a 22-20 edge to the halftime break.

Fergus Falls held the lead for the entirety of the second half building a nine-point buffer on an Ethan Olson field goal to go up 52-43.

DL answered with a 5-0 run to get within four points but the Otters were able to thwart a Laker comeback at the free throw line down the stretch.

Fergus Falls improved to 10-9 overall and 5-2 in section games. Aguilar led the Otters with 13 points.

Bettcher scored a game-high 21 points to pace the Lakers. Max Gunderson recorded a double-double scoring 14 and pulling down a dozen rebounds.

The Lakers (8-9) have lost three straight games and dropped to 0-6 against 8AAA opponents. DL plays four games in the next week against Mid-State Conference opponents beginning Monday, Feb. 11 at Pequot Lakes (13-5, 4-2). The Lakers are perfect in conference play at 5-0.
