The Detroit Lakes girls basketball team picked up an important Section 8AAA victory over Bemidji 62-56 at Ralph Anderson Gymnasium Friday, Feb. 8.
The Lakers came into the contest having lost seven of the past 10 games but big scoring performances from seniors Lauryn Manning and Breanna Price led the team to a third section victory.
Detroit Lakes built a 10-point lead by halftime. Price scored a dozen of her 22 points in the opening 18 minutes. Manning led all scorers with 23 points in the game, 14 coming in the second half.
The Lakers led 44-34 at the 10-minute mark of the second half before Bemidji went on a 12-0 run to lead 46-44 in a three-minute span.
After traded baskets and ties at 46 and 48, Manning delivered a field goal and Emily Larson drained a three from the corner for a 53-48 advantage; Price followed up with a pair of freebies to complete a 5-0 run.
Bemidji got to within a bucket at the three-minute mark on a Katie Alto shot in close. Alto led the Lumberjacks with 17 points.
An Alto three-pointer at 2:38 cut the Laker lead to a point 57-56 but a nice give-and-go from Manning to a pivoting Price led to an easy bucket to seal the win.
DL held Bemidji scoreless the final two minutes of play. Manning drained two insurance free throws in the final minute.
The teams split the season series with wins on home courts. Bemidji is 12-9 overall and 4-3 in the section, currently third behind Alexandria (16-3, 7-0) and Fergus Falls (17-3, 7-1).
DL entered the game fifth in the section and improved to 9-12 overall and 3-5 in 8AAA games.
The Lakers play out of conference and section in their next contest Tuesday, Feb. 12 at Class AAAA Moorhead (8-13).
