The undefeated Alexandria Cardinals improved to 4-0 after taking care of Detroit Lakes 90-48 at home Friday night.
Alexandria jumped on the Lakers from the get-go behind a full-court, zone press that created a bunch of turnovers early and pushed the Lakers’ offense out far on the perimeter. Alexandria has used that zone press to cause problems all season for opponents with the 6-foot, 5-inch Colton Roderick helping lead the way up top on defense.
The Cardinals led 50-22 at the half getting out in transition for a lot of easy buckets.
Alex showed how balanced they can be when everything is clicking.
Four guys finished in double figures, including the guard trio of Kristen Hoskins, Carrson Jones and Roderick.
Detroit Lakes’ senior Tate Kerzman had 20 points. Max Gunderson added 14, but the Lakers couldn’t keep up with Alexandria’s speed and overall depth.
Through their 4-0 start, the Cardinals are averaging 78.3 points-per game and holding opponents to 55.8.
The 90 points given up by DL is a season-high and the loss was the second in as many games to Section 8AAA opponents.
All four of Alexandria’s wins have come by double digits ahead of a big section showdown with St. Cloud Apollo (3-0) Tuesday, Dec. 17.
The Lakers (2-3, 1-0) play the same day at Staples-Motley (2-1, 1-0) in DL’s second Mid-State Conference game of the season.
