The Richfield Spartans came into the opening game of the Bemidji Christmas Classic against Detroit Lakes Friday riding a historical program-best eight-game win streak to start the season and pushed it to nine games after a 65-50 victory over the Lakers at Bemidji high school.
The Spartans built an 11-point advantage at halftime 37-26.
Detroit Lakes got within seven points twice in the second half but no closer.
Richfield’s Molly Stark led all scorers with 18 points.
Alex Bettcher and Sophie Gunderson paced the Lakers scoring 17 and 13 points, respectively.
Lakers fall to Irondale
Bettcher led all scorers with 22 points and Sarah Tangen added 11 as the Lakers were defeated by 10 points in the final game of the tournament losing to Irondale 58-48.
The Lakers trailed by only three points at the break 28-25 but were outscored by seven in the second half.
The Knights were led by 6-foot-1 center Dora Okpara’s 16 points. Kimori Morris added 10.
Detroit Lakes (4-5) has lost five straight games after opening the season with a four-game winning streak.
The Lakers face Thief River Falls (1-10) at home Friday, Jan. 3. The Prowlers have also dropped the last five games.
