Detroit Lakes was able to control the pace of play to its liking for most of the game but Alexandria pressured the Lakers and got loose on offense enough for a 68-57 Section 8AAA boys basketball victory Thursday, Jan. 16 at Ralph Anderson Gymnasium.

The teams played through eight lead changes in the first half four in the final minutes leading to a 28-25 Alexandria edge at halftime.

Tate Kerzman’s field goal put DL up 23-22. His bucket was matched by the Cardinals’ Colton Roderick. Drew Markuson scored to put DL up 25-24, but Carson Jones and Roderick finished off the half with back-to-back scores to give the visitors a three-point edge.

DL slowed the game to a battle of half court offenses not allowing the Cardinals to get up the floor in transition.

Both teams put together scoring runs in the second half.

Alexandria adjusted out of the break using a full court press on defense to force early turnovers from the Lakers scoring the first four field goals, two by Roderick and a pair from Ethan Patience to build a 12-point lead in the opening minutes 37-25.

DL responded with a 9-0 run started by a three from Gabe Hanninen, four free throws by Kerzman and a Max Gunderson deuce to get back to a one-possession game trailing 37-34.

A 9-1 Cardinal run on four straight baskets finished off by an Erik Hedstrom field goal put the Cardinals back in front by double figures 49-38.

Alex kept a 10-point cushion on the scoreboard down the stretch killing some clock in the offensive end using a stall to combat DL’s half-court zone defense. The Cardinals had little reason to press offensively with a comfortable lead on the scoreboard.
