Pequot Lakes opened up a 21-point first half lead and held off a Detroit Lakes rally after halftime for a 71-61 Mid-State Conference victory at home Thursday, Jan. 21.

Detroit Lakes held a 13-12 lead five minutes into the game, but an 11-0 Pequot Lakes run put separation on the scoreboard.

Trailing by 21 points, Laker head coach Rachel Nelson called a timeout and junior Alex Bettcher came out of the break to score six straight points as DL closed to a 40-26 halftime deficit.

Compounding the first half scoring problems were a dozen Laker turnovers that turned into Patriot points.

Detroit Lakes came out of the break with improved play scoring the first seven points to a 40-33 deficit.

DL would get as close as six points on a Jacee Hauser 3-point basket at 42-36 with 15 minutes left in regulation.

Pequot’s Isabelle Larson traded a 3-pointer for a follow-up field goal by Hauser, but the Patriots rebuilt the lead to 14 points with 10 minutes to go and held off DL’s offense enough to seal the victory as time ran out.

Bettcher led all scorers with 30 points. Abby Larson had 9.

The Patriot had four scorers in double figures. Kelsi Martini posted 16 points; Afton Crocker added 13, Maci Martini 12 and Lauren Schultz 10.

DL was 7-16 (44%) from the line; Pequot made 20 of 30 (67%).

The Patriots improved to 2-0 overall and 1-0 in the conference. DL dropped to 2-2 and 1-2 in Mid-State play.

The Lakers continue Mid-State play at Park Rapids Area (0-2) Tuesday, Jan. 26. The Panthers have posted early losses at Frazee and at home to Crookston.
