Detroit Lakes was near perfect at the free throw line and jumped on the Cardinals early in a 73-42 Mid-State Conference victory at Staples Friday, Feb. 12.
Sarah Tangen drained a three-pointer on the Lakers’ opening possession and the DL offensive got up and down the floor to a 13-3 lead six minutes into the game on a pair of Alex Bettcher free throws.
The Lakers were 18-21 at the charity stripe shooting 86 percent.
The Cardinals were able to stay within 10 points the remainder of the half as the Lakers took a 34-23 lead to the break.
An 18-4 run to start the second half put the game on ice. DL’s lead was a 30-point margin at the six-minute mark 61-31.
Staples-Motley’s Tabetha Allen recorded 13 points for the Cardinals; Aften Robinson added 10.
A dozen Laker shooters scored in the game, led by four in double figures: Jacee Hauser with 13 points; Alex Bettcher 12, Ava Gilbert 11, and Tangen had 10.
DL improved to 5-4 overall and 4-2 in conference play; the Cardinals are 3-6 and 1-5.
The Lakers will be at home Tuesday, Feb. 16 for a big Section 8AAA game with Alexandria. Cardinals head coach Wendy Kohler brings her team (7-2) to Ralph Anderson Gymnasium on a six-game winning streak.
The game is DL’s first of only three against 8AAA opponents this year. Alex, on the other hand, has 10 section opponents on its 18-game regular season schedule. Tuesday’s game will be the sixth for the top ranked team in 8AAA.
