Beyond the Game: Mahnomen

(WDAY TV) - In many small towns in the Red River Valley, football is the biggest thing going in the fall, but in Mahnomen, football is a way of life.

(WDAY TV) - In many small towns in the Red River Valley, football is the biggest thing going in the fall, but in Mahnomen, football is a way of life.

The Indians are the two-time defending Class A champs in Minnesota; winners of 32 in a row.

Take a drive North on Highway 59, and you'll stumble upon a small town rich in football tradition.

MICHELLE GIESEKE: When you meet people and you say I am from Mahnomen and they bring up the fact 'oh you guys have the great football team' of course we are proud of it.

JOHN CLARK JR.: For whatever reason it's a special place and football is at the core of it.

Mahnomen is normally pretty busy on Main Street during the week, but on Friday's it looks like this: Quiet as the entire town heads to the football game.

BOB BJORGE: Monday comes around all I think about is football Friday night.  So I got to get through the week and Friday finally comes and you wake up and it's like yeah, it's finally here.

KURT FRANCIS: That's probably my favorite part, listening to the crowd cheer for you and give you all that motivation for the next play.

With the Indians strong tradition of winning, the community support just continues to grow.

GIESEKE: It's something that everybody is proud of, not just the players and the coaches and the parents, but the whole town.  I think the last couple years with the championships and the state playoffs it's been something we all talked about, it's something that brings our whole community together.

The meeting place is the bleachers at the high school.

Where what seems like the towns entire population of just over 1,200 is cheering on the Indians, who are currently on a state best 32 game winning streak, but still chasing their school record of 44 straight set in the early 90s.

BJORGE: The tradition was there and it just kept going and going and it never let up and it's going till this day and I don't see it ever stopping.

And if the community has anything to say about it, it never will.

Mahnomen goes for a 33rd straight win Friday at BGMR.
