Bombers back up rankings in blowout

Waubun holds the No. 4 ranking in Class 9-man football and are ranked at the top of the class via the Quality Results Formula (QRF) and the Bombers continued to back up those rankings defeating Norman County West at home 55-31 Friday.

Waubun holds the No. 4 ranking in Class 9-man football and are ranked at the top of the class via the Quality Results Formula (QRF) and the Bombers continued to back up those rankings defeating Norman County West at home 55-31 Friday.

Dayton Makey scored three touchdowns, one rushing, receiving and on a fumble return and quarterback Peyton Syverson continued his strong play to lead the Bombers.

Makey opened the scoring on a 42-yard touchdown reception from Syverson five minutes into the game and Mason Bartos put Waubun up 12-0 on a 42-yard scoring run at 3:32.

Steele Armstrong answered for the Panthers with 91 seconds remaining in the first quarter scoring on a six-yard run to keep the game close 12-8.

The score remained that way for exactly six seconds of the second quarter when Hunter Clark hit Darius Woods-Steichen on a 14-yard touchdown pass to go up 20-8 after a Bartos conversion run.

Waubun blew the game open scoring 23 unanswered points in the second quarter after a Syverson one-yard pass to Justin Bellefeuille and a 15-yard Syverson run.

Waubun led 35-8 at halftime.

The Panthers added two rushing touchdowns in the third quarter – a 35-yard run by Miguel Garcia and a six-yard run from Ryan Borgen, his first of two second half touchdowns.

Syverson answered Garcia’s score with a 63-yard touchdown run and Makey scored his second to nullify Borgen’s touchdown scoring on a 16-yard run to end the third quarter with a the Bombers ahead comfortably 48-25.

Dylan Johnson of Norman County West nailed a 30-yard field goal and Borgen scored from 25-yards out for the final touchdown of the game.

In between the two scores, Makey returned a Dustin Beliles fumble 44 yards for Makey’s third marker of the game.

The two teams combined for 825 yards of total offense, Waubun 453 to the Panthers’ 372.

Syverson led all rushers with 150 yards on a dozen carries. He was 3-5 passing with two touchdowns.

Makey led Waubun receiving with two catches for 62 yards and a TD.

Garcia reached the century mark with 102 yards on only seven carries, averaging 14.6 yards per rush for the Panthers.

The Bombers remain perfect at 5-0 and will face a struggling 0-5 Cass Lake-Bena team next week at home. Waubun ends the regular season on the road versus NCE/U-H (3-2) in Ulen and close the year at Win-E-Mac (2-3).
