BOMBERS Waubun blanks Rothsay

A dominating 35-0 win was paced by the Waubun defense, as the Bombers shut down the Rothsay Tigers and held them to just 68 yards of total offense Friday.

Waubun started slow on offense, but the defense was dominant in the 35-0 victory.

Sam Lerud led the Bombers in rushing with 97 yards on 12 carries, but also accumulated 103 yards receiving on three catches, including a 50-yard touchdown bomb by quarterback Ryan McArthur.

Waubun led 7-0 after one quarter after a one-yard run by Sam Lerud, just to start things out for the Bombers.

"The first quarter was extremely sluggish for both teams offensively, we were finally able to punch one in late in the quarter after a big hit and fumble recovery by Jason Hanks and Kyle Erickson," said Waubun head coach Paul Clark.

The second quarter was all Bombers.

Two Ryan McArthur TD passes, one to Lerud for 50 yards and one to Jason Hanks, gave Waubun a 21-0 halftime lead.

"Rothsay was stacking the line of scrimmage and trying to stuff the run, so we let loose on some passes," Clark said.  "Sam made a nice adjustment and great run after to score, and Jason made a half-diving catch on a slant pass to score."

The defense was the real story though, as Rothsay only had one first down in the first half -- and it came on a broken play.

For the game, the Tigers could only muster two first downs and 68 total yards.  The Bombers also forced five turnovers, including interceptions by Lerud, Matt Fairbanks and Chris Manypenny.

The Bombers (4-3) put Rothsay (0-7) away in the second half.

A one-yard run by Cody Kologi and a bruising, smash-mouth one-yard run by Jacob Haugo gave the Bombers a 35-0 lead.

"We came out firing early in the second half, it was great to see the hustle and intensity by everyone," the Waubun coach said.  "This allowed us to rest some of our big guns and get everyone on the team significant playing time."
