Sophomore Dayton Makey scored a game-high 31 points and the Waubun Bombers snapped a 10-game losing streak to Highway 59 rivals Mahnomen with a 77-71 victory Thursday night in Pine to Prairie Conference boys basketball and did so in the Indians’ gymnasium in front of a standing room only crowd. “Dayton, he’s a shooter,” Waubun Head Coach Jon Syverson said. “Good shooters shoot whether they’ve been missing or making a few. When he gets hot, he’s tough to stop. Only being a sophomore, I couldn’t be more proud of him. He’s a heck of a player and he’s going to have a lot more nights like he did tonight.” The lead seesawed in the first half with both teams trading buckets to a 38-37 Mahnomen lead at halftime. The Mahnomen gymnasium was loud and crescendoed as the game progressed between the two schools separated by only 13 miles. “This is the biggest game of the regular season. No matter what, it’s always a great game, an exciting game.” After three early lead changes in the second half, Waubun slipped away and pushed the lead to 10 points 63-53 with 7:25 to play.
Mahnomen surged back to cut that lead in half on a basket by Nathaniel Kahlbaugh with 1:46 to play and the Indians got within one possession down three points with less than a minute to play. A Makey free throw pushed the lead to four points 73-69 and Mahnomen’s Dylan Reitan cut the lead to a deuce 73-71 with a half-minute to go. Sophomore Peyton Syverson calmly sank a pair of free throws and a turnover on Mahnomen’s next possession set up a breakaway layup for Cole Thompson to seal the victory. Makey led all scorers with his 31 points, scoring 16 in the second half. Thompson added 14 and Syverson had a dozen points. The Indians were led by seniors Reitan with 19 and Luke Warnsholz with 18. Junior Blake Kahlbaugh scored 10 points. Waubun improves to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the conference and Bomber confidence is riding high after a big win to get off the schneid against Mahnomen. “It’s a huge monkey off our backs, but we’ve got one night to enjoy it. We’ve got a long season ahead.” Mahnomen is 1-1 and 0-1 in the Pine to Prairie. Waubun’s last victory over Mahnomen was a 71-70 thriller Jan. 30, 2009 at Mahnomen.
