Boys Hoops: Raiders win overtime thriller in road opener

Sophomore Mitchell Hall hit the game-winning shot with seven seconds remaining in double overtime to lift the Lake Park-Audubon Raiders to an exciting 59-57 season-opening victory over Blackduck at the Fosston tournament.

Sophomore Mitchell Hall hit the game-winning shot with seven seconds remaining in double overtime to lift the Lake Park-Audubon Raiders to an exciting 59-57 season-opening victory over Blackduck at the Fosston tournament.

“It was a blast,” Head Coach Kyle Haberman said. “We played really well early and then forgot our defensive principles for a while.”

Defense appeared when it counted as the Raiders held the Drakes to a tough shot at the buzzer to win the game.

The Raiders had open looks to win in regulation and the first overtime but were unable to knock down the shot.

“It was really nice to see after guys had missed big shots, they weren't tentative the next time out. Justin Hanson, Hall, and Lane Ulmer all did exactly that.”

Hanson, a senior, and Hall combined to score 41 of the Raiders’ 59 points; Hall led all scorers with 21.

“I believe our biggest key was Sam Whitehead coming in late and playing great on-ball defense. He slowed down what they were trying to do.”

The Raiders advanced to Friday’s championship game versus the host Greyhounds. Fosston advanced by defeating Win-E-Mac 50-42 in Thursday’s nightcap.

Fosston (3-1) defeated LP-A (1-1) in the title game 52-39.

Tim Brekken led the Raiders with 12 points. Ulmer added 10.

Win-E-Mac (3-2) won the consolation game 62-39 over Blackduck (3-3).
