BOYS SOCCER PLAYOFFS Bemidji rolls in 2nd half against Lakers

The No. 5 Detroit Lakes boys' soccer team couldn't follow up their Section 8-1A playoff upset of No. 4 East Grand Forks, as the Lakers fell to top-seeded Bemidji 7-0 Saturday.

The No. 5 Detroit Lakes boys' soccer team couldn't follow up their Section 8-1A playoff upset of No. 4 East Grand Forks, as the Lakers fell to top-seeded Bemidji 7-0 Saturday.

"The wheels fell off in the second half," said DL head coach Justin Wegleitner.

The Lakers sparred close with Bemidji in the first half, as the Lumberjacks went into halftime leading 2-0.

But an early second-half tally snowballed into five more goals for the 7-0 victory.

"We played them pretty even in the first half, their keeper had a couple of good saves and we had some quality scoring opportunities," Wegleitner said. "Our runs just didn't produce a goal and we couldn't find that final gear to put the ball in the net."

The Lakers started the game with three high attackers to put some pressure on the Bemidji net, along with the wind, but no goals were produced.

In the second half, the Lumberjacks were able to string some goals together and take any momentum away from the visiting Lakers.

"We just fell apart there in the second half," Wegleitner said. "It was shocking to see, it seemed like we regressed to what we were doing in the first couple games of the season."

Cody Jordan and Nate Friesen were a pair of bright spots in the loss, though, as the two midfielders helped DL control possession and stay strong in the middle of the field.

Junior Ethan VanOffelen took the loss in the net.

The Lakers finish the season 7-10-1 and won six of their final eight games of the season.
