After being on two weeks of holiday break, the Detroit Lakes gymnastics team kicked off its 2011 portion of its schedule with a 138.75 to 127.3 victory over visiting Moorhead Tuesday inside the Minnesota Flyers Gymnastics facility.
The 138.75 mark was a little lower than expected for the Lakers, but there still were some top individual performances, which signifies a bright 2011 ahead.
"We were a little disappointed with the score, because we thought it would be a little higher," said DL head coach Steve Zamzo. "It did hurt we didn't have two days of practice because of the weather and our girls looked a little gassed towards the end of the meet."
Senior Amy Crawford looked to be in midseason form on bars, though, after she scored a 9.7, which is only .1 off the school record, which is held by Whitney Walter.
"In her previous meets, Amy fell off the bars, but she hit her routine tonight," Zamzo included. "She showed what she is capable of."

Crawford finished the evening winning floor with a 9.45 and all-around with a 37.4.
Junior Jess Stelter also captured a pair of events, winning the beam with a 9.4 and vault with a 9.45. She was second in all-around with a mark of 36.55.
"Jess had a very good beam," Zamzo added.
The Lakers continue their progress with their younger gymnasts, as Ally Berg was fourth all-around with a 33.0, while Maddie Hoffert finished sixth with a 30.6.
Hoffert landed an 8.8 on floor for second place, as well.
"Maddie's 8.8 on floor was huge for her," the DL coach said. "Our younger girls are still trying to get their routines together, so it's really just a matter of gaining experience."
The Lakers will travel to Fargo South Saturday for an invitational, starting at 11 a.m.
