Detroit Lakes’ junior Matthew Lundstrom has officially put himself in the running for a potential Class 2A state berth after finishing third in the Laker Rotary Invite Thursday at the Lakeview Golf Course. Lundstrom finished with a time of 17:30.7, which put him behind Bemidji senior Sam Carlson (17:12.8) and Fergus Falls’ Connor Danielson (17:23.4), but more importantly puts him in the elite of the Section 8-2A, since the top teams attended Thursday. “Finishing third is very impressive for Matt versus the cream of the crop in section,” said DL head boys’ coach Bill Kvebak. “He has the ability to be even better, too, and it definitely puts him in the mix to qualify for the state meet.” Senior Zach Foltz also will have to be mentioned, as well, after finishing 17th with a time of 18:12.8. In last year’s Section 8-2A meet, Foltz finished just inside the 30th position, so Thursday’s finish is a big step forward. “Finishing 17th has given him some confidence, that he belongs in the top 20,” Kvebak said. “He believes he can run better, too.”
The three through seven positions will stay in flux, with a host of young runners competing each week for those slots on varsity. This week alone, four new runners ran varsity from last week’s meet. Freshmen Aaron Johnson and Jess Livermore finished 62nd and 65th, while Austin Nelson rounded out DL’s scorecard with a 72nd finish. Other Laker runners included Michael Richter in 73rd and Zach Buboltz in 74th. “The three through seven spots are not secure and we’ll have a lot in and out of the lineup each week,” Kvebak said. “We are talking about those runners closing the gap on our top runners.” Frazee finished in 13th place, with Tanner Eischens leading the way in 45th with a time of 19:55.2, while Lake Park-Audubon was led in by Josh Huesman in 81st with a mark of 23:26.9. The Lakers will be back in action in Little Falls Thursday, for a 4:15 p.m. start.
