The Detroit Lakes trap shooting team went into the Minnesota State High School League clay target championship tournament ranked 26th among the 40 qualifying teams and finished in the same spot Friday, June 25, at the Minneapolis Gun Club in Prior Lake.

As a team the Lakers scored 455, 17 targets short of last week’s qualifying score of 472, a historical best for the decade-old program.

Cameron Akers and Ethan King both shot 94/100 to lead the team. Carter Haverkamp connected on 90 targets, followed by Kira Wolf 89 and Will Walberg 88.

Akers and King both had runs of 25 straight targets hit.

Of the four qualifying teams from Class 4A, Detroit Lakes was second best. Hibbing led the quartet finishing 16th (462). Hutchinson placed 28th (452) and Albert Lead finished 35th (442).

The 2021 team was the second at DLHS to qualify for state. The 2013 team finished in a four-way tie for 25th place.

Five of the seven state shooters will return next season. The Lakers had two departing seniors who finished their high school careers at state in Will Walberg and Alecia Akers.
