Defending Pine to Palm champion Ian Simonich continued to pace the Moorhead Spuds boys golf team to victories at the Classic Invitational at Madden’s Resort in Gull Lake Wednesday, May 12.

Simonich was the lone golfer under par shooting a 3-under, 69 to create a seven-stroke gap on the rest of the field.

Aside from Simonich, golfers in the rest of the field were all reporting higher than normal scores, according to Detroit Lakes head coach Bob Gorden.

“It is a very tough course that shows a person's weaknesses as you play,” Gorden said. “You need to be spot-on all holes or you pay. Everyone seemed to have two to three holes that were over par.”

Lukas Justesen and Jake Green led Detroit Lakes to a fourth place finish.

Justesen tied for eighth place (79); Green was a stroke back with 80 in a tie for 11th place.

Moorhead’s top three golfers finished in the top 10 and the Spuds (307) defeated Alexandria (320) and Brainerd (320) by 13 strokes. The Lakers shot 326 to finish fourth in a preview of next year’s competition in Section 8AAA.

The Lakers were the top AA team in the field and finished in front of five other AAA teams.

Aiden Lunde tied for 15th (82) and Lawsen Justesen (85) finished 24th to round out the DL team scoring.

The Lakers host the Northwest Classic, a two-day tournament May 14-15. The tournament begins at 1:30 p.m. Friday and starts at 9 a.m. on Saturday.

Gorden will have 14 DL golfers in the tournament jockeying for postseason lineup positions.
