Detroit Lakes captures 27th straight Mid-State golf title

Lakers edge medalist Tyler Seeling and the Pequot Lakes Patriots to keep the streak alive by just two strokes.

Detroit Lakes continued an amazing winning streak winning the Mid-State Conference boys golf team championship for the 27th straight time defeating Pequot Lakes by two strokes at Cuyuna Rolling Hills in Deerwood Monday, May 17.

Pequot Lakes’ Tyler Seeling carded four birdies in his 2-under round of 70 to claim the individual conference championship by four strokes over Beck Erholtz of Staples-Motley.

Three Lakers earned all-conference distinctions by finishing in the top seven.

Lukas Justesen placed fourth shooting a 78 (+6). Jake Green tied for fifth a stroke back at 79. Logan Schons tied for seventh (81).

Nick Tobkin was a stroke back with 82 earning honorable mention, along with teammate Tommy Suckert (84).

The Lakers compete next at Bemidji Town and Country Club Friday, May 21, before wrapping up the regular season at Headwaters in Park Rapids the following day.

Lakers fifth at last home invite

The Laker boys golf team placed fifth at the two-day Northwest Invitational at Detroit Country Club over the weekend.

Fargo Davis was the lone school to cut 600 in the team standings scoring 589 to win by 11 strokes over West Fargo Sheyenne (600). Moorhead placed third with a 608, behind medalist Ian Simonich.

Simonich is the defending Pine to Palm champion. He carded rounds of 4-under-par 67 and 2-under 69 to win with a 140 two-day total.

Davies’ Gabe Benson was the only golfer to challenge Simonich finishing two strokes off the pace.

Detroit Lakes shot 18 strokes better as a team on day two (306) after opening with a 324. The Lakers (630) finished 20 strokes behind fourth place Grand Forks Red River

The top four DL golfers all finished in the top half of the field of 66 golfers, 14 of which were from Detroit Lakes.

Nick Tobkin tied for 12 place shooting a 153 (+11). Lukas Justesen (156) was in the top 20, tying for 18th place. Logan Schons finished tied for 21st place (159). Jake Green placed 24th overall (161).
