Detroit Lakes girls run away from the field at Staples

Lakers put scoring golfers in the top 10 for another big win.

A day after shooting their best round of the season, the Detroit Lakes girls golf team picked up another victory at the Cardinal Vintage in Staples Saturday, May 22.

The Lakers were also at least 30 strokes better than the competition shooting a combined 331 to second place Elk River’s 365.

DL’s top two golfers switched positions on the leaderboard from Friday’s win in Fergus Falls with Freshman Hanna Knoop earning medalist honors with a 4-over-par 76. Knoop shot matching 38s on both sides of the course, 3-over on the front nine and 1-over on the back.

Junior McKenna Mallow was three strokes back (41-38 79) in sole possession of second place by four strokes.

Freshman Laura Syltie tied for fourth place with Moorhead’s Grace Bernstrom with an 85 (44-41).


Seventh-grader Tatum Gatheridge put all four scoring Lakers in the top 10 with a ninth place score of 91 (46-45).

The Lakers showcased their team depth playing without regular senior starters Evan Westrum and McKenna Burhans and winning handily.

Sydney Miller shot 100 in the five spot; Maddie McDougall carded 107 in her first varsity action.

Detroit Lakes plays at Madden’s Resort in Brainerd Wednesday, May 26, to play in a 12-team field that includes nine of the 14 Section 8AAA teams, including front-runners Alexandria and Brainerd.
